Cheltenham Illustration Awards - Thumbnail Sketchs

Having recently finalised my research stage during my "Work Based Learning 1" module at Newcastle College It is not an important aspect of my creative process to explore and experiment with the composition and visual read that each of my three concept designs have for the purposes of creating an entry to the Cheltenham Illustration Awards. The following pictures are the experimental thumb nail designs which I created as a visual response against my outlined proposal and treatment concept.

Concept 1 – Start of something new
The first concept which I will be exploring follows the narrative concept of two peoples whose lives are becoming entangled. Essentially the purpose and aim of the illustration is to convey the visual concept of two people falling in love at first sight.

The thumbnail design which has been created first when considering and exploring my third concept consist of a mid-shot, portrayed side on displaying the conclusive meeting of the two protagonists. I found this composition to give the impression of been bold and direct. Everything that is conveyed is obvious which is exactly what is required when aiming to successfully win a competition. Having the audience understand the concept clearly is vital for the success of the production project. The camera perspective also enables the audience to become more immersed due to the influence of the environment surrounding the concept.

The second thumbnail design that I created in response to my outlined concept narrative transformed the camera angle perspective and changed it to an over the shoulder shot with the aim of giving a greater sense of intimacy. This perspective makes use the camera angle to emulate the impression that you are seeing from the boy’s perspective. Essential this shifts the focus of the concept to ensuring that the boy feels more like the protagonist and the girl the love interest. I feel that this engages the viewer with a more front on approach than the previous thumbnail experiment which utilises the face as a technique to create more impact regarding the intend vision for the concept.

The final thumbnail test which I created for this concept utilised a “First person perspective” point of view which is designed to emulate the popular video game style of focus. I believe that this point of view made use of a perspective which conveyed intimacy in a much more direct vision. This level of intimacy was the last perspective which I had to explore regarding camera angle which demonstrates a clear impact a result of the designs composition choice. This point of view utilises peoples emotions by putting them directly the protagonists point of view stimulating the idea of considering their perspective.
